PET vs PETG Cosmetic Bottles: How to Choose for Your Packaging Project
Compare PET and PETG cosmetic bottles through finished samples, formula testing, closures, decoration and quotation requirements.

Choosing between PET and PETG cosmetic bottles involves more than comparing their appearance. The right choice depends on your formula, bottle design, dispensing system, decoration and order requirements.
For a useful comparison, start with two specific bottle options that meet the same brief. Comparing bottles with different capacities, weights and closures will not tell you what difference the material itself makes.
Start with the Same Packaging Brief
Before requesting samples or quotations, define:
- Your product type and intended fill volume.
- How the product will be dispensed: pump, sprayer or screw cap.
- Your preferred bottle shape, dimensions and appearance.
- The quantity required for each size, color and design.
- Any printing, finishing or matching carton requirements.
For example, a 150 ml pump bottle and a 260 ml screw-cap bottle serve different packaging needs. Choosing between them is a decision about capacity and dispensing as well as material.

Compare Finished Samples, Not Just Material Names
If a clear appearance is important to your brand, compare actual bottle samples under the same lighting. Look at the shoulder, base and sidewalls, then review the bottle with your product inside.
The finished appearance also depends on the resin grade, molding process, wall thickness, color and decoration. A material name alone does not establish which bottle will look better for your project.
Check practical details alongside appearance:
| What to compare | What to check on the sample |
|---|---|
| Shape and dimensions | Does the bottle fit the intended shelf, carton and shipping arrangement? |
| Bottle weight | Does the sample feel appropriate for the product and brand? |
| Clarity and color | Does the filled bottle match the approved visual direction? |
| Label or print area | Is there enough usable space for artwork and required information? |
| Closure fit | Does the complete pack close and dispense correctly? |
Test Compatibility with Your Actual Formula
Do not approve either PET or PETG solely because another brand uses it for a similar product.
Material suitability depends on the specific resin grade, formulation and conditions of use. Evaluate the intended bottle with your actual formula and complete closure assembly. Resin manufacturer Eastman likewise identifies compatibility, temperature and part design as factors in end-use suitability and recommends evaluating finished products under actual use requirements. Technical reference
Agree on the test conditions and acceptance criteria with your formulation team or testing partner. Depending on the project, observations may include leakage, changes in appearance, deformation, cracking and dispensing performance.
A successful visual sample review is one stage of approval; it does not replace formula compatibility testing.
Approve the Bottle and Closure Together
The bottle material does not determine whether a pump or sprayer will suit your product.
Confirm the neck specification, closure fit, dip-tube length and dispensing behavior using the assembled pack. For pump products, check operation with the actual formula, including priming and the amount dispensed.
Also consider how the pack will be transported. A bottle that looks correct on a desk still needs an appropriate closure and shipping arrangement.
See our guide to choosing pumps and closures for the details to include in your packaging brief.
Compare Costs on an Equivalent Basis
Avoid assuming that one material will always produce the lower-cost packaging option. Ask for quotations against comparable specifications.
A useful quotation should identify:
- Bottle model, capacity, weight and color.
- Pump, sprayer or cap specification.
- Decoration and artwork requirements.
- Quantity per model, color and artwork version.
- Any tooling or sample charges.
- Packing requirements and delivery terms.
If one quotation includes a decorated bottle and pump while another covers an undecorated bottle only, the unit prices are not directly comparable.
Confirm Minimum Quantities and Timing for the Selected Design
At LANYU, minimum order quantities vary by material, model, stock availability and customization requirements. Stock packaging and custom production can have different minimums. Confirm the quantity for each selected option rather than applying one minimum across the entire range.
For most styles, the typical lead time is approximately 31 days after receipt of the deposit. The schedule for your selected style and customization requirements will be confirmed with the order. Stock availability and dispatch timing should be checked separately, and transport time to your destination should also be confirmed.
Before paying the deposit, make sure the quotation records the approved specifications and any outstanding sample or artwork approvals.
Make the Final Decision with an Approved Sample
Choose the option that meets your formula, dispensing, appearance and purchasing requirements together.
Before proceeding, confirm that:
- The selected bottle has been evaluated with the intended formula.
- The complete bottle and closure assembly meets your requirements.
- The finish and artwork match the approved sample.
- Minimum quantities and quotation scope are clear.
- Production and delivery arrangements are documented.
Keep an approved reference sample and specification for the order. Our cosmetic packaging sample approval checklist can help organize that review.
