Stock or Custom Cosmetic Bottles? How to Choose for Your Launch

Compare stock bottles, existing designs with customization and new bottle molds. Confirm quantities, approvals and timing before your launch.

Choosing between stock and custom cosmetic bottles involves more than deciding how distinctive the packaging should look. It also affects availability, minimum quantities, sample approvals and the work that must happen before filling.

Start by separating three options: bottles already in stock, an existing bottle design produced for your order, and a new bottle shape requiring mold development. These options should not be treated as having the same ordering process or schedule.

Understand What “Stock” Means in the Quotation

A bottle shown in a catalog is not necessarily ready for dispatch.

Ask whether the quoted quantity is physically available in the required size and color. Confirm whether matching caps or pumps are also available, and whether the quotation includes any decoration or additional packing.

An existing bottle model may still need to be manufactured for your order. It can avoid the need to develop a new shape, but its availability should be confirmed separately from the availability of stock.

When Stock Bottles Are Worth Considering

Stock bottles may suit a project when an available design meets your requirements and the launch does not depend on a unique shape.

They can also provide a starting point for evaluating a packaging concept before committing to more extensive customization. However, the selected bottle still needs to work with your formula, filling process and closure.

Before ordering, check:

  • The quantity available for the exact model and color.
  • Whether the bottle and closure are supplied together.
  • Whether samples represent the stock being offered.
  • Any inspection, packing or decoration work required before dispatch.
  • How a later repeat order would be supplied.

An initial stock purchase does not establish the availability or terms of future batches. Discuss replenishment if the bottle will become part of an ongoing product range.

When an Existing Design with Custom Decoration Makes Sense

A new bottle mold is not the only way to create a coordinated brand presentation.

An existing model may support your project through a suitable label, print or other confirmed decoration option. Review what is achievable on the selected bottle rather than assuming every finish is available on every material or shape.

Provide the artwork, intended colors and finish references early. Ask for confirmation of the usable decoration area, approval process and quantity requirements.

This route still requires time for preparation and approval. An undecorated bottle being available does not mean the decorated pack is ready to ship.

When to Consider a New Bottle Shape

A new mold may be appropriate when available designs cannot meet a specific requirement, such as dimensions, shape or a defined packaging concept.

Before proceeding, explain which requirement an existing bottle cannot satisfy. This helps establish whether new tooling is necessary or whether an available design can meet the brief.

Request a clear scope covering design work, tooling, trial samples, revisions and approval responsibilities. Confirm what is included in the quotation and what would create additional cost or time.

Our bottle mold development guide outlines the stages to discuss before committing to tooling.

Build the Schedule Backward from the Launch

Separate the date you need packaging at your filling location from the date you want finished products available for sale.

Your plan may need to accommodate:

  1. Bottle and closure selection.
  2. Sample evaluation and formula compatibility testing.
  3. Artwork or color approval.
  4. Production and decoration.
  5. Inspection, packing and dispatch.
  6. Transportation, filling and final packing.

Confirm which activities can happen together and which depend on an earlier approval. A production estimate alone is not a complete launch schedule.

For most styles, LANYU’s typical lead time is approximately 31 days after receipt of the deposit. The schedule for the selected style and customization requirements is confirmed with the order. Stock dispatch timing and projects requiring new mold development should be confirmed separately, along with transportation time.

Confirm Minimum Quantities for Each Specification

Minimum order quantities vary by material, model, stock availability and customization requirements.

Ask for the minimum applicable to each bottle size, color and decoration version. Do not assume that quantities across different models can be combined to meet one minimum.

For example, a project with two sizes and three artwork versions should identify the quantity for each combination. This gives the supplier a clear basis for confirming workable order terms.

Keep those terms in the written quotation so that the approved specification and purchasing conditions remain connected.

Approve the Complete Pack Before Ordering

Whether you choose stock or custom packaging, review the bottle with its intended closure and formula.

Check filling, dispensing, leakage, appearance and fit inside any outer carton. Keep an approved reference sample and record the specification used for the order.

For stock packaging, confirm that the approval relates to the goods being purchased. For custom production, confirm how the approved sample will be used as the production reference.

Use our sample approval checklist to organize the review.
